PaperLast started with one hauler in California’s Central Valley: one truck, a handful of
restaurants, three staff, and a clipboard that had to become a legal document by the end
of every day.
The problems were never the ones a feature list would have predicted. A stop recorded in
a basement where there was no signal. A tank nobody could find, because the address on
file was the front door and the container was round the back behind a gate. An invoice
that waited a fortnight because the ticket it depended on was still in a cab. A customer
who had not received their paperwork for months, and no screen anywhere that said so.
Every one of those is now something the software has an opinion about — and the opinions
that look strict are strict because the loose version failed somebody in the field first.
The paperwork was never the job. It was the tax on doing the job, and it was being paid
twice — once in the cab and once in the office.
